WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Wood County authorities saw the number of calls on the Deidre Week case taper somewhat during the weekend, but several leads are ahead for the next few days, said Investigator Tom Reichert.
“We’re following up, on really, a number of people,” Reichert said this morning. “Some to a higher degree, I guess, than others. “
The 11-year-old girl was killed when a hit-and-run driver struck her March 24, while riding her bicycle at 6:44 p.m. along Highway HH in the town of Hansen. A witness to the scene reported a four-door mid-size Oldsmobile Cutlass or Chevrolet Celebrity type vehicle, either red or burgundy in color, hit Week.
About 100 calls came into the Wood County Sheriff’s Department by the end of last week. Among them were prank calls that included a false tip traced to a 15-year-old Vesper boy. Authorities were concerned people in the area might point fingers at a suspect and take justice into their own hands.
“We’re still confident we’re going to get to the bottom of this,” Week said.
Anyone with information in the case is encouraged to call the Wood County Sheriff’s Department.
