WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Practical jokes accompany anonymous tips to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department on the hit and run death of an 11-year-old Vesper girl.
Dozens of tips are coming in on vehicles appearing similar to the deep red burgundy General Motors mid-size car that killed Deidre Week March 24 on County Trunk HH Vesper.
About five practical jokes, all generated by adults, “are discouraging” Sheriff Brian Illingworth said.
One tip involved a 15-year-old Vesper boy that turned out to be a false lead and was traced to a friend of that youth with a vehicle resembling the description. In the meantime, the first youth’s presence in the community drew calls from Vesper residents.
“I have concern about people thinking there’s a suspect and taking the matter into their own hands,” Illingworth said.
He continues to urge residents to call the Wood County Sheriff’s Department toll-free at 384-5345 from Marshfield, 652-3551 in Auburndale or 884-6596 from Pittsville.
